Joe's pond ice out winners refers to a contest held at Joe's Pond in West Danville Vermont. The contest was about guessing the time in which the ice would go out. Since each time of the of the year where the ice would go out was different, there needed to be a systematic way to find the exact times of when the ice went out. The system which was developed was a simple one. A clock would be tied to a cinder block and once the ice had gone out, the clock would stop at the exact time at which the ice had gone out. The winner of the contest would be chosen by seeing which person's guess was closest to the actual time.

Around the nineteen eighty's, when this contest had started, only a few hundred people had participated in this game. Just a few years later, nearly one thousand five hundred people joined the contest, each betting on the time the ice would go out. What used to be collected in the notebook, was now collected in a data base due to the ever-increasing amount of people joining this guessing contest. Now the game has grown to an astounding twelve thousand entries. Now the system which they use for determining when the ice goes out has changed into a weather proof clock.
